The Analysis is Based on a Ranking of the World?s Top-500 Universities
An assessment carried out by AllAboutUni. com found that despite having two universities in the World’s Top-25, the overall performance of Japanese universities is weak. AllAboutUni. com is an independent, global and interactive website where visitors can obtain information about universities (global rankings, student reviews, university news and campus pictures).
The analysis is based on a ranking of the World’s Top-500 Universities produced by the Institute of Higher Education at the Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Several indicators of academic or research performance are used to establish the ranking, these include staff winning Nobel Prizes, highly cited researchers and articles indexed in major citation indices.
The World’s Top-500 universities (2008) are mainly located in Europe (n=210; 40%), the Americas (n=190; 40%) and the Asian/Pacific region (n=100; 20%). There are 31 (6%) Japanese universities, contributing roughly one in three (31%) of the Asian/Pacific region universities.
There are four Japanese universities in the World’s Top-100 universities and two of these are ranked in the World’s Top-25 universities: Tokyo University (ranked 19th) and Osaka University (ranked 23rd). The distribution of the other Japanese universities is as follows: five ranked 101-200, two ranked 201-302, six ranked 303-401 and 13 ranked 402-503.
In order to make a comparison with other industrialized countries, AllAboutUni calculates the number of universities in the World’s Top-500 per million inhabitants. An earlier assessment found that small countries in Western Europe (Sweden (1. 2), Finland (1. 1) and Switzerland (1. 0)) do very well. Other large industrialized countries have the following number of universities per million inhabitants: Australia (0. 7), United Kingdom (0. 7), Canada (0. 6), Germany (0. 5), United States (0. 5), France (0. 4) and Italy (0. 4). Japan (and Spain) only has 0. 2 universities in the World’s Top-500 universities per million inhabitants.
These findings indicate that Japan has one of the lowest densities of the World’s Top-500 universities amongst industrialized countries. They also indicate that Japan has a density that is six times lower than Sweden and more than three times lower than Australia or the United Kingdom.
In conclusion, despite having two universities in the Word’s Top-25 universities (Tokyo University and Kyoto University), the overall performance of Japanese universities is poor compared to other industrialized countries around the world.
One in Three American Universities Located in Just Five States- Top-500 Universities in the World
An assessment of the World’s Top-500 universities [1] carried out by AllAboutUni. com reveals that one in three American universities are located in just five States: New York, California, Texas, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania. AllAboutUni. com is an independent, global and inter-active website where visitors can obtain information about universities (global rankings, student reviews, university news and campus pictures).
Looking at the World’s Top-500 universities, roughly 40% are located in Europe (n=210), 40% in the Americas (n=190) and 20% in the Asian/Pacific (n=100) area (click here). In the Americas, the majority of universities are located in the US (159, 75%), with 21 in Canada, 6 in Brazil, 2 in Chile and 1 in Argentina and 1 in Mexico. At the top of the list, the US clearly dominates with 8 of the World’s Top-10 universities located in the US (click here).
An analysis of the States where the US universities are located, indicates that 36% (n=57) – more than one in three – are located in just five States: New York (15), California (13), Texas (13), Massachusetts (9) and Pennsylvania (7). This is not evenly distributed, with California having a higher representation at the top of the list: in the World’s Top-25 universities, the distribution is California (6), New York (2), Massachusetts (2), and Pennsylvania (1) and Texas (0). It is striking to note that 11 (44%) of the World’s Top-25 universities in 2008 are located in these five States, indicating there is also a global clustering of the World’s Top universities.
Looking at the World’s Top-10 universities, three of the States represent 60% of these universities: California (Stanford University (ranked 2nd), University of California – Berkeley (3rd) and the California Institute of Technology (6th), Massachusetts (Harvard University (1st) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (5th)) and New York (Columbia University (7th)). All things equal, it would be expected that the highest number of universities in the US would be located in the most populated States. Indeed, three of the five States are the most populated in the US: California (ranked 1st with 36. 6 million inhabitants), Texas (2nd with 23. 9 million) and NewYork (3rd with 19. 3 million). However, other factors play an important role as smaller States like Pennsylvania (6th with 12. 4 million) and Massachusetts (14th with 6. 4 million inhabitants) also contribute significantly to the list of World’s Top-500 universities.
Finally, it is interesting to note that a US university does not need to be ‘old’ to be ranked highly in the World’s Top-500 rankings. In the US, the oldest university is Harvard University which was established in 1636. However, the performance of universities in California and Texas, which are the home to ‘young’ universities, clearly indicates that a university does not have to be ‘old’ to obtain a high ranking. For example, Stanford University, located in California and ranked second in the world, was established in 1891 and the University of Texas – Austin, located in Texas and ranked 35th in the world, was established in 1883. In conclusion, the analysis indicates that the top universities in the US are not evenly distributed across the country and are clustered in certain States. States with a clear clustering of the World’s Top-500 universities are New York, California, Texas, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania.
Background note: [1] The analysis is based on a ranking of the World’s Top-500 Universities produced by the Institute of Higher Education at the Shanghai Jiao Tong University (click here). Several indicators of academic or research performance are used to establish the ranking, these include staff winning Nobel Prizes, highly cited researchers and articles indexed in major citation indices. The rankings have been published since 2003, with the 2008 ranking published on 15 August 2008.
Australia University Ranking- Comparing Top 10 Australian Universities
What are the top ten Australian Universities? There is no official government ranking of universities in Australia. However there is a number of university league tables produced every year by relevant bodies such as the Melbourne Institute, The Australian Newspaper, The Good Universities Guide, THES and Shanghai Jiao Tong University’s academic ranking of world universities.
The Melbourne Institute (operated by the University of Melbourne) has produced its own ranking of the international standing of Australian universities. This ranking is based on a number of performance indicators such as international standing of staff, views of Deans and CEOs, resources, undergraduate programs, undergraduate intake and graduate programs.
According to Melbourne Institute 2007 the top ten Australian Universities (in order of ranking) are: Australian National University (ANU), University of Melbourne, University of Sydney, University of Queensland, University of New South Wales (UNSW), Monash University, University of Western Australia (UWA), University of Adelaide, Macquarie University and Queensland University of Technology. From this ranking ANU was the number one Australian university in terms of international standing and reputation, followed by Melbourne and Sydney. Is this result representative? Here we will analyze and compare it with the other two famous international league tables – THES and Academic ranking of world universities (ARWU).
Ranking Comaprison:
•- The list of top four universities produced by the Melbourne Institute are the same in ranking order as THES and ARWU 2007. We are confident to say that they are the Best Four – ANU, Melbourne, Sydney and Queensland.
•- Group of Eight (Go8) Universities are among the top 8 universities as ranked by the three different league tables. These include the Best Four and the rest of the group – UNSW, Monash, UWA and Adelaide.
•- Macquarie and QUT are among the top ten list (after Go8) in the Melbourne Institute and THES league tables.

Eight Eu Countries not Represented in the World?s Top-500 Universities
An assessment carried out by AllAboutUni. com reveals that 8 of the 27 countries in the European Union (EU) are not represented in the World’s Top-50 universities. AllAboutUni. com is an independent, global and inter-active website where visitors can obtain information about universities (global rankings, student reviews, university news and campus pictures). It publishes regular reports on universities around the world.
The rankings have been published since 2003, with the 2008 rankings published on 15 August 2008.
The eight EU countries that are not represented in the World’s Top-500 universities in 2008 are: Bulgaria, Cyprus, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Romania and Slovakia. In other words, small countries in Western Europe (Cyprus, Luxembourg and Malta) and countries in Eastern Europe (Bulgaria, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania and Slovakia). All of the other EU countries are represented in the list, with the top five being: Germany (44 universities), United Kingdom (42), France (23), Italy (22) and the Netherlands (12).
Overall, the Europe region is well represented in the World’s Top-500 universities, with roughly 40% (n=210) of universities based in this region compared to 40% (n=190) for the Americas and 20% (n=100) for Asia/Pacific. However, when one looks at the Top-100 Universities, there is a predominance of US universities (58 universities versus 23 for Europe), and the United Kingdom performs better than other European countries. In the Top-10 Universities, US and private universities are dominant .
One hypothesis is that the larger EU countries will dominate the number of universities in the list of the World’s Top-500 Universities. This is clearly the case with Germany, United Kingdom, France and Italy providing the most (62%) of the universities from Europe. However, if one adjusts for population size (i. e. one calculates the number of universities in the Top-500 per 1 million inhabitants in the country), the following ranking is obtained: Sweden (1. 2 universities in the World’s Top-500 Universities per 1 million inhabitants), Finland (1. 2), Austria (0. 9), Denmark (0.
and the Netherlands (0. 7). This means the EU countries with the most universities per 1 million inhabitants are located in smaller countries in Western Europe, especially countries in Scandinavia.

World?s Top Universities: Private Universities in the US Dominate World?s Top-10 Universities
An assessment carried out by AllAboutUni. com reveals that private universities in the US dominate the world’s top universities. AllAboutUni. com is an independent, global and inter-active website where users can obtain information about universities (global rankings, student reviews, university news and campus pictures).
The assessment of the World’s Top Universities has been produced on a yearly basis since 2003 by the Institute of Higher Education at the Shanghai Jiao Tong University. The Institute ranks the World’s Top 500 Universities based on several indicators of academic or research performance, these include staff winning Nobel Prizes, highly cited researchers and articles indexed in major citation indices.
The top 10 Universities in 2008 were (listed in descending order): Harvard University, Stanford University, University of California at Berkeley, University of Cambridge, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), California Institute of Technology (Caltech), Columbia University, Princeton University, University of Chicago and University of Oxford. With the exception of 2003, when the University of Yale was ranked 8th, the rankings have remained relatively stable over the past six years.
A closer look at the rankings reveals that in each year since 2003, 8 out of the top-10 universities were located in the United States and 7 were private institutions. The exceptions were the University of California at Berkeley, which is a public institution in the United States, and the Universities of Cambridge and Oxford, which are public institutions in the United Kingdom.
The dominant position of private universities is striking and would suggest that these institutions, some of which were established relatively recently (e. g. Stanford University which was established in 1891), are better equipped to provide a world-class academic environment. This may be related to better management practices, a more global outlook (compared to public universities which often operate on a regional basis), access to greater resources (e. g. the endowment of Harvard University is currently 34. 9 billion US dollars) and possibly also greater academic freedom (e. g. freedom to concentrate solely on academic research).
